Argueably the new pages offer plenty of potential for savvy marketers to leverage their fans. Timeline is much wider, contains a huge cover banner , a much more visually engaging layout and some cool new posting features that really add to the users visual experience.

But the problem is  not only has the look of Facebook brand pages changed, so have many of the rules for marketers and I’ve already seen quite a few brands making some potentially fatal mistakes with their new cover image banner.

To help you keep within Facebook’s terms of use and protect your brand page from potential deletion I have provided a brief outline of what you can and cannot do when it comes to leveraging your facebook cover real estate. The rules in a nutshell are that you cannot direct advertise on your facebook cover image, but here’s the fine detail.

Cover images must be at least 399 pixels wide and MAY NOT contain:

•Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website“ •

•Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section

•References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features •

•Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”

I hope this helps you understand just one of the many changes that Facebook’s timeline brings with it. Facebook recently rolled out their new look business pages using what is called the Facebook Timeline and whether you like it or not all business pages will be switched over to the timeline view on 31st March 2012.
